Title: Petition to Support Indigenous Laws and Ensuring Compliance with Repatriation Laws at the Smithsonian
Dear fellow Americans and United States citizens,
We, the people, stand in solidarity with the Autochthonous Americans and their mission to ensure compliance with repatriation laws at the Smithsonian Institution. It is imperative that we uphold the rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples by returning Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural heritage to culturally affiliated federally recognized Indian tribes, as mandated by the National Museum of the American Indian Act (NMAIA) and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
The NMAI has already taken steps to address repatriation cases through its established Repatriation Policy. This policy recognizes the importance of repatriation as a human rights issue and prioritizes the return of these items to their lineal descendants and communities of origin, regardless of geographical or socio-political boundaries. By supporting the proper implementation of this policy, we can honor the founding philosophy of the museum and uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
In light of the closure of exhibits like the Giant NY Native American Museum, it is vital that efforts are made to expedite the return of remains and sacred items. We, therefore, call upon the Smithsonian Institution to expedite the repatriation process in accordance with the law.
Furthermore, we urge the Smithsonian to ensure full transparency by conducting audits and providing open access to the collection for federal tribal governments or agencies concerned. This will ensure accountability and foster a collaborative approach towards repatriation and cultural heritage preservation.
Additionally, we support the Autochthonous Americans in their proposal to entrust the artifacts and exhibits to the AUTOCHTHONOUS™️ American private trust/estate for future display at tribal clan affairs, including the upcoming grand museum "The Al Amarikanos™️ Americans Museum - More Than Just Faces." This exhibit aims to honor and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Autochthonous Americans in a professional and respectful manner.
By signing this petition, we affirm our commitment to supporting Indigenous laws and advocating for the repatriation of Native American artifacts and remains. Let us unite in protecting and preserving the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and recognizing their rights to their own history.
